About Me

My name is Maura and I'm a wife, mother and writer in my mid-forties living in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
Although I was active and in shape in my youth, by my mid-twenties I'd given up on making time and effort for fitness and health. Oh, like many of my friends, I'd make occasional ventures into "dieting" and even more occasional decisions to "get in shape" but they never really went anywhere. When an opportunity came to quit, quit I did.

Something was always more important. Something was always more urgent. Something was always more fun and heck, something was always LESS WORK than taking care of myself. I cannot say I'm just unlucky or a victim. I have had a full part in what has happened to my once healthy and fit body.

In the past two years, a series of events has unfolded in my world and those have really driven home the point that if I want to have a good quality of life and avoid many of the ailments that are coming my way, I need to work hard and work now. I need to lose the 100 lbs of extra weight I've been toting around. I need to develop an active lifestyle. Above all, I need to stop taking the easy road and take the RIGHT road.

Right now the list on my plate includes:
  • Obesity
  • Celiac Disease
  • Metabolic Syndrome/Pre-Diabetes
  • Rosacea
  • Mild Heart Issues
On July 12, 2011, I have set out on to make slow strides on this long road back to health and fitness with a combination of diet and exercise plus a (I hope) temporary boost from an insulin sensitizer.

I have an overall goal of returning to a fit and happy lifestyle. If you're joining me on this journey, welcome. If you have already made this journey, I salute you and welcome any wisdom you have to share. If you also need to go down this road, I encourage you to do so NOW. It will never be any easier than it is today.
